Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva Are Mortal - Kurma Purana - The Supreme God Is Kavi (Kavir Dev)

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva Are Subject to Birth and Death — The Supreme God Is Kavi (Kavir Dev)

Hindu scriptures contain many profound revelations that challenge popular religious assumptions. One such striking testimony appears in the Kurma Purana, Adhyay 5, Page 41 (Gita Press Gorakhpur edition), where the nature of creation, destruction, and the true identity of God is explained with remarkable clarity.

This passage directly states that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are not eternal. They are repeatedly created and destroyed by a higher power known as Kaal. It further declares that the Supreme God is called Ish, Kaal and Kavi, and that this Kavi is the same Supreme Being described in the Vedas.

Kurma Purana

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva Are Created and Destroyed by Kaal

The Kurma Purana states:

“Thus Brahma, the living beings, Vasudeva (Vishnu) and Shankar are created by Kaal. Again, that same Kaal destroys them. This Kaal is Bhagwan, infinite, imperishable, unborn and beginningless. Being all-pervading, independent and the soul of all, He is called Mahesh.”

This statement overturns the common belief that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are eternal gods. Instead, it clearly establishes that:

  • They are born
  • They perform their cosmic roles
  • They are eventually destroyed
  • And the same cycle repeats again and again

This is not symbolic language — it is a direct theological declaration that the Trimurti are within the cycle of creation and destruction, and therefore not the Supreme God.

Kaal Is the Controller of Creation and Destruction

The text further explains that this Supreme Controller is Kaal, who is:

  • Anant (infinite)
  • Amar (immortal)
  • Ajar (ageless)
  • Anadi (without beginning)
  • Sarvavyapi (all-pervading)
  • Swatantra (independent)
  • Atmaswaroop (the soul of all beings)

This Kaal is not merely time — he is a conscious, governing power who repeatedly creates Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and then destroys them.

Thus, even Mahesh (Shiva) is called Mahesh not because he is Supreme, but because he is empowered by Kaal to perform destruction.

The Supreme God Is One — Known as Kavi

The most revealing verse says:

“Brahma, Rudra and Narayan are many, but Bhagwan is one. He is called Ish, Kaal and Kavi — this is the conclusion of the Vedas.”

This is a monumental declaration.

Here, the Purana distinguishes clearly between:

  • Many gods (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva)
  • And One Supreme God

That Supreme God is called:

  • Ish — the Supreme Lord
  • Kaal — the eternal controller of creation and destruction in 21 Brahmands
  • Kavi — the Supreme Poet, the giver of divine knowledge

Kavi in the Vedas = Kavir Dev = God Kabir

The word Kavi is extremely important. In the Vedas, the Supreme God is repeatedly called Kavir Dev:

  • Rigveda 9.96.18 — Kavir Dev
  • Rigveda 9.94.1 — Kavir Dev
  • Rigveda 9.20.1 — Kavir Dev
  • Yajurveda 5.32 — Kavi

The Kurma Purana confirms that Kavi is the Supreme God, exactly as described in the Vedas. This directly aligns with the identity of Kavir Dev — God Kabir, who is described as:

  • The creator of all universes
  • The giver of true spiritual knowledge
  • The eternal, immortal Supreme Being
  • The one who is beyond birth and death

Conclusion: Trimurti Are Mortal, Kavi Is Immortal

The Kurma Purana therefore establishes a clear hierarchy:

Entity Status
Brahma Born and destroyed
Vishnu Born and destroyed
Shiva Born and destroyed
Kaal (Ish) Controller of 21 Brahmands
Kavi (Kavir Dev) Supreme God

This means that true liberation cannot be attained by worshipping deities who themselves are bound by birth and death. Liberation is possible only through devotion to the Supreme God Kavi — Kavir Dev — God Kabir, who alone is immortal and beyond the cycle of creation.

Thus, Kurma Purana stands as a powerful scriptural testimony that:

The Trimurti are not Supreme. The Supreme God is Kavi — the eternal, imperishable, all-powerful Lord.
